My Yamaha QT50
















This is a Yamaha QT50 motor scooter. Some also call this a moped but a true moped can be pedaled as a bicycle or powered with a small motor. I have owned this particular scooter for three years. I bought this and a Suzuki FA50 from a guy in the Dallas area at the same time. Both were project bikes when bought: running (barely) and with most everything still attached. The FA50 I recently sold and now it's time for this one to leave the roost as well.







The bike runs incredibly well. Starts right up, and after a couple of minutes of warming up it takes right off. All electrics work: high and low beam headlight, turn indicators, horn, indicator lights, speedometer light, and tail and brake lights. Speedometer also works. Yamaha says it will get up to 30 mph, and I believe it. However, I've never had it over 20 mph because 1) no need to in my neighborhood and 2) a bit afraid of going this fast on one of these things







Let's see, since I've owned this the following has been done: thorough carburetor cleaning, new battery as of June 2007, new air cleaner element, new headlight, new fuel filter and fuel lines, new fuel petcock, new seat cover, and new paint on the fenders and peg covers. Hasn't really needed anything else. It has run strongly ever since I've had it. It can be a hard starter but a carburetor cleaning takes care of that issue (as any 2-stroke moped owner is aware.)








The only real issue with this bike are the side covers. I have them but they no longer stay on. QT50 side covers use a small plastic tab that snaps into place. The friction is no longer enough to keep them in place. However, they come with the bike. There is also the front plastic cover that covers the front electrics and horn. This was also originally secured using plastic tabs that have lost their grip. The front cover is now held in place using a white plastic tie. New owner can probably figure out a more aesthetically pleasing solution. It has about 1,600 miles showing on the odometer. Although there is nothing to prove this is accurate, the overall condition indicates this could be so. It does have some signs of going down. The from grill is slightly bent, and the rear view mirrors are gone.

  1. I have to same bike. Got it from a man who bought it new, used it for a few years, and parked it in his shed. Original title and parts--all in great condition. I'm looking for a second bike it you're interested. I can be reached at 202-709-3212... Located in Iowa, not DC.
